Staying on Track
Discovering opportunities to keep young people in the sport of athletics in New Zealand.
The project came about from concerns at club and regional level about the sharp drop off among teenagers in athletics and the difficulty of sustaining future-focused initiatives.
We reviewed academic and popular discussions in the field, met and talked to clubs, coaches, young athletes and their families, and observed club nights in action to deeper understand the dynamics in the local experience of clubs. From the evidence we developed a theory of the ecosystem in which the athlete experience occurs, deepened insights about the problem to solve, and generated a set of primary opportunities to bring focus to initiatives.
